In August, 2010, David and Judy Weir noticed that “Dutchess,” their 6 year old chocolate Labrador Retriever started vomiting and not feeling well. So, they brought Dutchess in for an examination.
Dutchess’ vital signs were normal and her symptoms vague-nothing specific except lethargy and the history of vomiting was noted on the physical examination. Since there are many causes of vomiting, especially in older pets, and these problems are not always found without the help of laboratory tests, further investigation was needed to find the source of Dutchess’ problem.
Blood and urine samples were taken. Part of the testing was done in house at the clinic and part was sent to the TVMDL (Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory ). The TVMDL has two locations, one of which is in College Station. This lab specializes in animal diagnostics and is a great asset to the veterinarians and pet owners in Texas.
Our in house laboratory showed significant abnormalities in enzymes that may be increased due to liver disease. Dutchess was treated for vomiting with anti-emetics, dehydration with intravenous fluids and antibiotics.
When all results came back from the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, it was confirmed that Dutchess was suffering from liver disease.
Dutchess was hospitalized for several days while receiving treatment. During this time, everyone at the clinic came to know and love Dutchess.
After being home for a couple of days, Dutchess began vomiting again. After further evaluation, it was decided that Dutchess needed more treatment time to recover completely. She responded nicely and went home a few days later. Her diet was changed to Royal Canin’s Hepatic LS Veterinary Diet (a diet especially made for liver health). She responded successfully to the treatments and diet change.
Judy and David Weir continue to take great care of Dutchess. Recent medical progress laboratory and physical examinations indicate that Dutchess’ liver is recovering well. She is alert, energetic and does very well with her new diet and medications that help keep her liver strong and healthy.
